The temple
consists of two sanctums – one dedicated to Lord Shiva and the other, Lord Vishnu. Built of cut stones and blocks of
granite, the temple reflects the true essence of Dravidian architecture. The Shore Temple complex was designated
as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with other temples and monuments of Mamallapuram. Marco Polo in his travels has identified the Seven Pagodas of Mamallapuram. The shore temple is believed to be one among these Pagodas.

Day 03: Mahabalipuram

After breakfast proceed for sightseeing.

Krishana Butter Ball: This colossal orb of granite is a sphere of such perfect balance and proportion that it seems as if it were crafted by the gods themselves. It sits there, upon its tiny pedestal, defying the laws of physics and nature, as if held aloft by the very breath of the divine. It is not just a marvel of nature and science; it is also a symbol of the playful nature of the god Krishna and a reminder of the delicate balance between the mortal and the immortal. And as you stand before this wonder, you cannot help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for the power of the divine and the beauty of the natural world.

Ganesha Ratha Temple: This temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, showcases the intricate craftsmanship and devotion of the era. This monolithic rock-cut temple is a fine example of the Pallava dynasty’s architectural prowess, featuring intricate carvings and a unique structure. The Ganesha Ratha Temple is a remarkable example of Dravidian architecture, carved entirely out of a single rock. The temple resembles a ratha or chariot, a common feature in the rock-cut architecture of Mahabalipuram.

Five Rathas Temple: The Pancha Rathas, also known as the Five Rathas, are a stunning collection of monolithic rock temples in Mahabalipuram. These are monoliths, i.e., free-standing temples cut out of the solid rock of a hillock. These are popularly known as Rathas, the chariots or temple carts but without wheels. They only housed the images of deities and no worship was done during those days. These were carved out during the reign of Narasimhavarman I in the 7th century AD and are regarded as the earliest monuments of their kind in India. These monoliths can be placed subsequent to the cave temples. They are known as Pancha Pandava Rathas, after the Pandava brothers and their common queen.

India Seashell Museum: Visit the museum and behold the breathtaking collection of rare and unique shells – a veritable cornucopia of shapes, sizes, and colours – each more magnificent than the last. From the spiralled elegance of the conch shells to the delicate intricacy of cowrie shells, the museum’s collection is an awe-inspiring visual feast.)
